England ended up winning their group last night, but did not beat the Ukraine by the cricket score that the vocal majority demanded. A disciplined and smart performance against technically superior opponents goes completely under appreciated in this country, and last nights was no exception.
More alarming is that England fans are already loading their pistols in anticipation of elimination, and if the comments flying about at half time were anything to go by, they were all aimed squarely at the Manchester United trio.
According to the idiots consensus on Twitter, Rooney was lazy, Young was crap and Welbeck was not in the game. Apparently Carroll “did more when he came on”. Unbelievable.
When you have Steven Gerrard refusing to make any pass less than 30 yards in length and Scott Parker standing still spinning, it’s difficult for a front three to get in the game. The problem was with the platform, not what was being supported by it. This was demonstrated when Rooney snaffled one of his two chances to give England the win.
Unless someone does something special, it’s going to be yet another United scapegoat. Might as well brace yourself for it now.
